Tilapia is the most environmentally and financially efficient protein solution for Africa. Its feed conversion ratio is five times lower than beef.
Lusaka, May 4 – “Mpandashalo, you are not discussing the potential of I Ng’umbo and yet you have the skill to describe our area in a manner that can attract life changing investment,” Eng. Peter Chibwe Kapala admonished me.
I agreed and so, allow me to share with you what I discussed with this hard working lawmaker, whose true work and dedication to Zambia’s social economic development aspirations have been dwarfed by cheap politics.
Our place is, indeed, a marvel! When you look out over Lake Bangweulu, the grey blue waters disappear into the horizon, blending in completely with the colour of the sky.
It is difficult to tell just where the horizon is and ‘Bangweulu’ is a fitting name, meaning ‘The Place Where the Water Meets the Sky.’
This breathtaking lake is what Eng. Peter Chibwe Kapala wants us to see in a different way: Cage Fish Farming, feeding the world. And I agree.

These waters are a natural home for bream, tiger fish, yellow belly (impende) and imbowa (catfish) but the lake is known to harbour 83 plus species. This means Eng. Peter Chibwe Kapala’s business proposal, if given the attention it deserves, can change the face of I Ng’umbo.
He says, “Tilapia is the most environmentally and financially efficient protein solution for Africa. Its feed conversion ratio is five times lower than beef. Investment in sustainable Zambian aquaculture can therefore help reduce reliance on imports and provide food for millions of people while supporting local agriculture industry. I want lake Bangweulu to be on the world map for the right reason, not accidents!”
