“In a civilised world, the police understand that a man does not have to feel less than human to realize his crimes; oppositely, he has to realize that he gets no special vindication for his crimes.”
Mpandashalo.
Lusaka, June 17 – In this article, I labour to explain to the Zambia Police Service what President Hakainde Hichilema means when he talks about the rule of law.
So what should the rule of law in the Amb. Mwamba case be?
It’s certainly not abduction but:
◾Issuing a police call-out,
◾Interrogating him,
◾If proved to be a suspect, issuing a warn and caution statement,
◾Arresting and taking him to the courts of law where he would have to defend himself.
In this particular case, it appears like the documents in question are authentic and the motive behind his abduction was to find out the source, hence the torture. Otherwise, while not just slap him with an appropriate case without torturing him?

By the way, in the event that he had circulated authentic but leaked documents, a professional journalist would never reveal one’s source of information. No amount torture would change that ethical part of our profession.
This case, whichever way one looks at it, is one that may be a game changer in the manner the Zambia Police Service will from now on treat suspects because if this behaviour continues, President Hakainde Hichilema’s reputation abroad will be just as bad as it is at home.

The case will certainly attract international attention because Mr. Mwamba is not an ordinary person.
Currently standing for the position of president of the Patriotic Front, Mr. Mwamba is former Ambassador to the African Union and former Permanent Representative to the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa. Previously, he served as High Commissioner to South Africa, Permanent Secretary and Spokesperson to Second President, Frederick Chiluba.
In a civilised world, the police understand that a man does not have to feel less than human to realize his crimes; oppositely, he has to realize that he gets no special vindication for his crimes.
The truth in my analyses and commentaries may hurt, but it will make you think and reflect. Noone can mislead you when you know the truth.
