Is it possible that we have allowed ourselves to rely too heavily on the popularity of President Lungu, rather than presenting a compelling vision for our party’s future?
By Dr. Mwelwa.
Lusaka, June 28 – Once upon a time, an interesting question emerged amidst the rebranding discussions of the Patriotic Front party. “What if we had simply let President Lungu retire peacefully, without dragging him back into the political spotlight? What if we focused on our future endeavours rather than engaging in political attacks?”
Had we not detected the underlying motives of the “Alebwelelapo agenda,” perhaps we would have refrained from discussing President Lungu. We could have allowed him to quietly enjoy his retirement benefits.
It is a thought worth pondering, my fellow party members. Imagine a world where the former President could bask in the glory of his retirement benefits, enjoying the fruits of his labour without the relentless scrutiny of the political arena. Perhaps we missed an opportunity to let him gracefully step aside, allowing new leaders to take the helm without turning him into an opponent.

As we think back to the Central Committee meeting nestled in the comfort of the ex-President’s sitting room, questions arise. Did this choice inadvertently rekindle his influence over the party? Could we have avoided this situation altogether? Perhaps it’s time to reevaluate our decision making processes, ensuring that they align with our goals of unity and progress.
Some may argue that our criticism of President Lungu has shifted in tone. Gone are the days of physical attacks and intimidation; instead, we have chosen a more civilized approach, resorting to legal action. But have we fully distanced ourselves from our past actions? Can we truly say we have broken free from the cycle of aggression and hostility?
Let us not forget the storming of radio stations and the intimidation tactics employed against station managers who dared to host opposition voices.
And what about Kalungwishi FM, Prime TV, Post Newspaper? Can we deny the responsibility that falls, at least in part, on President Lungu’s tenure? It is a chapter in our history that cannot be ignored.
And now, as President Lungu continues to hold political gatherings, it seems inevitable that we target him politically. Some may question if this approach stems from a lack of an alternative message or the inability to convince Zambians to re-elect the Patriotic Front based on our own merits.

Now is the time for self-reflection, my friends. We cannot deny the hard work and dedication of our colleagues in the Patriotic Front in developing infrastructure. However, let us not disregard the instances of significant resource misallocation that have occurred amidst the construction frenzy.
The Kashikishi Lunchinda Road serves as a poignant example, where substantial funds were allocated but progress remains elusive. We must address these issues head-on, holding ourselves accountable for effective resource management.
In response to the challenge posed by President Hichilema, let us unveil our alternative approach. Let’s assure the nation that change is indeed on the horizon. We must communicate our stance on the withdrawn meal allowances, clarify our position on the 20% NAPSA partial withdrawal, and outline our plans for empowering women in the markets through market booster loans.
Transparency is key, as we openly declare our intention to reduce the Constituency Development Fund to K1.6m.
Moreover, we must confront the issue of the burdensome debt accrued during our time in power. It is imperative that we present a concrete strategy for addressing this challenge, ensuring that future generations are not unfairly burdened.

As we reimagine the future of the Patriotic Front, let us not forget the lessons of the past. It is true that President Lungu’s retirement could have been peaceful, free from political attacks. But let us not dwell solely on what could have been.
Instead, let us focus on rebranding the party, promoting a culture of unity and progress, and navigating a path that leads us towards a stronger, brighter Zambia.
