“The problem Mr. Hichilema has is the fact that his understanding of politics is that it doesn’t matter; you can cheat, provided you get your goals!” – Levy Patrick Mwanawasa.
Lusaka, July 29 – It’s true that sometimes politicians don’t understand the promises they make when they are campaigning. But a statesman keeps the promises anyway. That’s what integrity is all about, keeping the promises at any cost.
When we used to tell Hichilema the same reasons he is advancing for the current rise in fuel prices, he disputed, calling the previous regime incompetent who were stealing from the public through unnecessary middlemen and unnecessary taxes.
The current high price of fuel is enough evidence that his pre-election campaign promise to reduce the cost of fuel was a lie probably because he was desperate to become President when he had no verifiable alternative development agenda to sell.
This is a man who campaigned against the introduction of Toll Gates but today has sold the same Toll Gates for 25 years in a scam PPP arrangement to build a road that Zambia can build from proper management of sugilite, emeralds, gold, cobalt and copper.

And what happened to the exchange rate pre-election campaign promise after being sworn in at 10.00hrs? The Central Bank whose coffers were empty when he became President has spent billions of US dollars to keep the exchange rate close to Government’s desired target. The burning question is; “What’s the true value of the Kwacha to convertible currencies without this costly intervention?”
Amos Malupenga, in his book, ‘Levy Patrick Mwanawasa: An incentive for posterity’, quotes the late president as saying;
“The problem Mr. Hichilema has is the fact that he wants to cheat, to mislead, to show that he is what he is not. His understanding of politics is that it doesn’t matter; you can cheat, provided you get your goals!”

In a world where vows are worthless, where making a pledge means nothing, where promises are made to be broken, it would be nice to see words of a statesman come back into State House.
