Zambia Police Spokesperson, Rae Hamoonga has confirmed that officers will be punished administratively for detaining a child aged eight overnight in police custody.
Lusaka, July 13 – An 8 year old boy of Matero East who was detained by police for assaulting another child aged twelve has been released from custody.
Zambia Police Spokesperson Rae Hamoonga has confirmed the release.
Mr. Hamoonga said the officers erred when they detained a child and punitive measures against the officers responsible will be taken administratively.
Mr. Hamoonga said the boy was found with sharp instruments which he used to injure the other child. The child’s mother has confirmed the release, stating that the child is undergoing counselling.
The boy spent a night in detention after his parents, allegedly, failed to pay K1,000 for the boy’s release.

In another development, two maids of Lusaka have been taken to court over a theft of $15,000 and ladies’ underwear belonging to their employer, Ali Ecall, a Lebanese national.
The accused, namely Bethsheba Malupende and Fales Tembo, are facing one count of theft by servant.
According to the court documents, they also stole a headcover, washing dish, carrack food medicine, properties all valued at K262,600.
The incident is alleged to have happened between May 30th and June 6th, 2023. If found guilty and convicted, they risk serving a maximum jail term of five years.
