Lusaka, Aug. 11 – The Government has announced the upcoming upgrade of the Chingola-Solwezi road into a dual carriage way. This is in addition to the upgrade of the Chingola-Chilabombwe road which was in a deplorable state.
The question is, how is Chingola positioning itself to benefit from these welcome developments? Is there a deliberate, researched agenda to position the town in the front seat of economic opportunities that will flow from these developments or is the town merely content with the idea of just having good fruitless roads?

Has anybody bothered to make a raw assessment of the incremental economic impact of the Chingola-Kitwe dual carriage way apart from the obvious reduction in road traffic accidents? What can Chingola economically produce to benefit from a well-built road network on both sides of the town?
Let’s forget the minerals for a bit because that is not in our hands. The local participation in the mineral economy of the town is both dismal and shameful given that mines take up more than 30% of the total land mass of the town.

In this regard, we need to yield to a higher call for us to find an answer to what else our hands can produce out of Chingola. Otherwise, these roads will only be good for smooth rides and that, in the long run, will really be a shame!
