Lusaka, Aug. 2 – As an entrepreneur who has faced numerous challenges, risks, and relentless criticism, and then gone on to achieve considerable success, I understand the weight these factors can place on a startup.
Embracing the journey and overcoming challenges, risks, and relentless criticism, is crucial for the growth, survival and prosperity of your business.
Let me share with you what I believe are valuable insights and strategies that have helped me through the treacherous waters of entrepreneurship to emerge stronger amidst risks, criticism, and negativity. Perhaps they will do the same for you too.
1. Embrace risks with pragmatism:
Embracing risks is an inherent part of entrepreneurship. Rather than shying away from them, approach risks with pragmatism and calculated decisions. Conduct thorough market research, analyze the potential outcomes, and be prepared for contingencies. While not all risks will lead to success, adopting a risk-positive mindset will allow you to seize opportunities that others might overlook.
2: Convert criticism into constructive feedback:
Criticism is inevitable in the business world, and as a startup, you might encounter it more frequently. Instead of letting it deter you, view criticism as an opportunity for growth. Negative criticism usually comes from people who don’t know you, competitors who use dark arts to try to get ahead of you by pulling you back, people close to you who do not believe in you and the worst of all, people who only hear about you from the people who hate you.

However, there is also positive feedback also known as constructive feedback, which is very different from baseless negativity. Constructive criticism can provide valuable insights to refine your product, service, or business model. Embrace feedback as a means to improve and stay ahead of your competition. This comes from well-meaning individuals or entities that support your dream or have been where you are.
So regardless of the type of criticism, the cheat code is: Convert all criticism to positive feedback because regardless of how unfair, hurtful, malicious, baseless or useless some criticism may be, there is some shred of an opportunity to grow. Sometimes it would just be a change of lifestyle. Other times it would be as profound as changing your entire approach to business.
3. Cultivate a resilient mindset:
As an entrepreneur, you will undoubtedly face challenges that test your resolve. Developing a resilient mindset is essential for overcoming setbacks and persisting in the face of adversity. Understand that failures are stepping stones to success and use them as learning experiences. Celebrate your successes, no matter how small, and let them fuel your determination to push forward.
4. Build a supportive network:
No man is an island. Learn to amass knowledge from the people who have been where you want to be and are giving it out to you. Surround yourself with a supportive network of mentors, advisors, fellow entrepreneurs, and friends.
Having a reliable support system will help you navigate through tough times and offer valuable perspectives. Reach out to industry peers and attend networking events to establish connections that can be beneficial for your startup’s growth.
5. Focus on solutions, not problems:
When faced with negativity or challenges, focus your energy on finding solutions rather than dwelling on the problems. Train yourself to approach every obstacle with a problem-solving mindset. Look for innovative ways to address issues and stay adaptable in an ever-changing business landscape.

6. Stay true to your vision:
Amidst criticism and negativity, it’s essential to stay true to your vision and mission. As a startup founder, you need a clear sense of purpose to drive your business forward. Believe in your idea, and if needed, pivot strategically, but never lose sight of the core values that define your business.
7. Celebrate small wins
The journey of entrepreneurship is extremely hard and you may give up if you don’t see yourself moving forward. Keep tabs on where you are and learn to celebrate every positive movement going forward. Every small win counts.
Acknowledging and appreciating your achievements, no matter how modest, will keep you motivated and boost the morale of your team and yourself. These victories will be stepping stones towards your ultimate goals.
As a time-tested, battle-hardened entrepreneur, I have faced numerous obstacles, risks, and criticism on my path to success. I learned that handling risks, criticism, and negativity effectively requires a combination of pragmatism, resilience, and a positive mindset.
Embrace risks with calculated decisions, convert criticism into constructive feedback, and build a supportive network to lean on. Stay true to your vision, focus on solutions, and celebrate every small win along the way.
Remember, hardships may come, but with determination and the right attitude, you can overcome them and achieve greatness in your business journey.
