Lusaka, Oct. 26 – Lumezi Town Council would like to caution residents that there has been confirmed cases of Anthrax outbreak within the district following laboratory tests confirmations.

“We must invest in robust systems that are integrated and do not only ensure sustainable livestock health, but also protect humans and other habitats of the ecosystem from pandemics,” – Dr. Chitalu Chilufya.
The confirmed cases of Anthrax specifically affect the Zokwe Wildlife Camp in Buleti Veterinary camp under Chief Kazembe along the Luangwa river and immediate measures to control the spread of the disease in the surrounding areas have been enforced.

You may wish to note that following the approval of the Revised Decentralization Policy by Cabinet, Veterinary Services under the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock have been devolved to the Local Authority.
To this effect, restrictions have been imposed on the movement of meat and live animals within and outside the District in accordance with the Animal Health Act No. 27 of 2010, Section 6 Subsection 1(a) with effect from 24th October, 2023 until the outbreak is contained.
We, therefore, urge residents to refrain from any contact with dead animals and to avoid consuming meat from carcasses of either wildlife or domestic livestock.
Surveillance will continue to be conducted in the affected camps in order to track the spread of the disease among hippos and domestic livestock.
