Read Law Association of Zambia resounding message calling for political independence and the preservation of democratic ideals in Zambia.
Lusaka, Nov. 07 – The Law Association of Zambia (LAZ) has expressed deep concern regarding recent developments within the Patriotic Front, Zambia’s main opposition party. LAZ underscores the crucial role political parties play in upholding the nation’s multi-party democratic system and recognizes the rights of these parties as enshrined in Article 60 of the Constitution.

LAZ firmly believes that a thriving democracy relies on robust political parties, both ruling and opposition, which uphold national values, foster unity, and allow citizens to freely associate and assemble. Consequently, LAZ expresses worry over the events surrounding the Patriotic Front.
However, LAZ emphasizes that external stakeholders, including state institutions, must refrain from interfering in the internal affairs of any political party. Instead, the Patriotic Front should be permitted to address its internal challenges through the established channels defined in its constitution. In the event of disputes, the Zambian Constitution prescribes that they should ultimately be resolved by the courts of law.
LAZ underlines that the courts of law are the sole institutions mandated to settle disputes according to the Zambian Constitution. Both ruling and opposition parties must respect and adhere to the decisions rendered by the courts. Furthermore, LAZ cautions against attacking the integrity of judicial officers based on personal disagreement with their rulings.
This press release serves to underscore the importance of constitutional provisions, national values, and principles, as well as the rights and freedoms of citizens. It reinforces LAZ’s statutory mandate, as outlined in the Law Association of Zambia Act, to uphold the rule of law and promote justice in Zambia.
