Lusaka, May 24 – Following the recent conduct of the Zambia Police towards the Bishop of Kabwe, Rt. Rev. Clement Mulenga, and the former Head of State, Mr. Edgar Lungu, the Zambia Conference of Catholic Bishops (ZCCB) has gained attention for its strong condemnation of the Zambia Police conduct, and rightly so.
The incident occurred on May 17th, 2024, when the former President paid a courtesy call on the Bishop. The Bishops have described the Police actions as “incredibly scandalous and intimidating” and a “serious invasion of the Bishop’s privacy.”
This incident has brought to light several critical issues facing the country, including human rights violations, police misconduct, and its political implications. In this article, I will discuss these topics, providing a brief analysis of the broader implications of this incident.
The Catholic Church in Zambia plays a significant role in the country’s religious and social landscape. With a sizable Catholic population, the Catholic Church serves as a moral compass for many Zambians and actively speaks out on pressing issues.

The ZCCB letter, equally, exemplifies the mounting concerns regarding human rights abuses within the nation. It is crucial to understand the gravity of the situation and the impact it has on our young democracy.
By examining specific incidents, such as the recent incident in Kanwe, we can shed light on the larger issue of human rights violations in the country. The Catholic Church’s strong stance against these violations should raise awareness and encourage conversations around the need for change.
This Kabwe incident should seriously draw attention to the problem of police misconduct in the country, where law enforcement personnel have overstepped their boundaries. Such misconduct not only undermines the rule of law but also erodes public trust in the Police Service.
It is essential to address the root causes of this issue and take steps to hold accountable those responsible for misconduct. The Catholic Church plays a crucial role in voicing these concerns and advocating for justice.

This condemnation carries significant political implications. The incident has sparked wider conversations about the state of democracy and human rights in the country. It raises questions about the relationship between the government and the Catholic Church, as well as the role of the Police in maintaining law and order.
Furthermore, it highlights potential abuses of power and the need for transparency, accountability, and respect for human rights in our country’s political landscape. By taking a stand, the Catholic Church is contributing to creating a more just and inclusive society.
President Hakainde Hichilema must understand that the Catholic Church in Zambia continues to advocate for justice, bringing attention to these issues and encouraging positive change. It is essential for his government to work with the Church to address these challenges and strive towards a more equitable and inclusive society.
