Lusaka, May 24 – It has come to the attention of some concerned senior citizens and youths of Jere Compound, about 130 metres away from Walela Urban Health Post of Chipata District a public health male nurse by the name of Mike, aged 26, of Walela Urban Health Post, has been a volunteer since March, 2023.

The young man has been seen several times by elderly men and women in Munga area riding his bicycle going for outreach health services on the Chipata-Lundazi road.
And yesterday, 23rd of May, 2024 around 08:00hrs when he was interviewed by some motorbike owners near the road where he went to seek after his bicycle tyre had suffered a puncture, Mike said ever since the facility motorbike developed a problem, he has been sacrificing his personal bicycle to help carry the vaccines cooler box and mosquito nets, adding that primary health care is cardinal to health.

And Mr. David K, founder of DK Nation social media campaign, Voice of the Voiceless, has told Woodpecker’s Digest in a telephone interview that people who have interacted with the young volunteer at the clinic, have narrated that he is a very calm, and humble nurse who has built good relations with everyone.

And some concerned senior citizens have urged government, through the DK Nation social media campaign, to look at the plight of the young volunteer whose service the community so dearly needs. They bemoaned the fact that underdeveloped rural areas still use bicycles for transportation of essential health services.
“The government should prioritize rewarding hardworking health volunteers with permanent jobs!” one senior citizen was heard lamenting.
