Lusaka, May 5 – The decision by the Ministry of Health to remove some NHIMA covered critical health services due to alleged abuse rather than addressing the alleged abuses contradicts the core tenets of Universal Health Coverage (UHC) whose aim is to ensure that all individuals and communities can access essential health services without suffering financial hardship.

Dr. Chilufya’s counsel is premised on a policy formulation dimension that places Zambians at the nub of its economic development goals. He said NHIMA is a robust, resilient and sustainable tool to finance health services for all, leaving no one behind.
Firstly, the act of simply cutting off essential health services without investigating and rectifying the purported abuses demonstrates a lack of proactive leadership. Effective leadership in the health sector involves identifying problems and implementing solutions to address them rather than resorting to blanket removal of services.
By failing to tackle the root causes of abuse within the NHIMA system, the Ministry of Health is neglecting its responsibility to ensure the well-being of the population and uphold the principles of UHC.
Moreover, the decision to remove critical health services without addressing the alleged abuses contradicts the core tenets of Universal Health Coverage. UHC aims to ensure that all individuals and communities can access essential health services without suffering financial hardship. By limiting the scope of services available through NHIMA, the government is essentially undermining the very concept of UHC and depriving citizens of their right to comprehensive healthcare coverage.
Furthermore, the failure to address the purported abuses within the NHIMA system reflects a broader lack of understanding of the complexities of healthcare delivery and health systems management. A more effective approach would involve conducting thorough investigations into the alleged abuses, implementing measures to prevent future occurrences, and ensuring that all citizens have access to quality healthcare services.
To truly advance the goals of UHC and ensure the well-being of the population, it is essential for leaders to take a more proactive and comprehensive approach to addressing challenges within the healthcare system.
