Prioritizing loyalty to the state rather than to the Head of State is essential for maintaining a stable and enduring governance system.
By Mpandashalo Mwewa.
Lusaka, June 30 – When loyalty is directed towards the state, it fortifies the bedrock principles of democracy, the rule of law, and institutional integrity. This aligns perfectly with my advocacy for a homegrown governance system that puts development front and center, leaving the politics of patronage by the wayside.

Governmental structures must operate autonomously from any individual leader’s sway, championing accountability and warding off abuses of power. In my advocacy, I envision a state-centric loyalty that galvanizes public servants and citizens alike to uphold the constitution and laws, nurturing a culture of governance grounded in shared values and collective interests rather than the caprices of a single individual.
Conversely, when loyalty is channeled towards the Head of State, it paves the way for unprecedented authoritarianism, as evidenced by President Hichilema, and the erosion of democratic institutions.
We have witnessed how personal allegiance to President Hakainde Hichilema has crippled checks and balances, with officials prioritizing the president’s favour over adherence to laws and ethical standards. How else can we explain the Judiciary’s farcical endorsement of Miles Sampa’s Patriotic Front extraordinary conversion?
The current political system is recipe for corruption, nepotism, and the concentration of power in the hands of a few, diluting the state’s capacity to serve its citizens effectively. My call for unwavering loyalty to the state aims to safeguard the integrity of public institutions, uphold the fair and just application of laws, and protect the long-term interests of our nation above fleeting political ambitions.
