When someone endures personal hardships, their health inevitably suffers. Maureen Mwanawasa, at 61, had so much more to give, yet Hichilema squandered that potential.

Lusaka, Aug. 14 – Upon learning of the passing of our former First Lady, Maureen Mwanawasa, my thoughts immediately turned to the many challenges she faced, particularly in her later years.

One must ask, who among those who once benefited from her influence stepped up to support her during her trials? It is undeniable that Hakainde Hichilema was among the greatest beneficiaries of Maureen Mwanawasa’s political support. She played a significant role in reshaping his image, helping to dispel the tribal and self-serving labels that once plagued him.
There was even an expectation that Maureen would serve as Hichilema’s vice-president should he have won the 2015 by-election following the death of President Sata. But for reasons only known to Hichilema, she was sidelined, and from that moment, Hichilema turned his back on her.
In her most trying times, what did Hichilema do? On a personal level, nothing. Instead, he made a symbolic gesture by appointing her daughter, Chipokota Mwanawasa, to a position of Deputy Head of the Presidential Delivery Unit at State House. Yet, it was Maureen herself who deserved recognition and support in her own right.
Now, with her passing, the same man who neglected her is shedding crocodile tears on social media, lauding her virtues in a display of hypocritical grief. Let us not deceive ourselves – Maureen endured great hardships. Such difficulties inevitably take a toll on one’s health, shortening life’s span. At just 61 years old, Maureen was still young, with much left to give, yet her potential was squandered by Hichilema’s indifference.
As we speak of caring for our people while they are still alive, let us remember the state of Madam Vera Chiluba and reflect on how we continue to torment Madam Esther Lungu. May peace also be with Madam Kaseba Sata.
I am deeply pained as I mourn Madam Maureen Mwanawasa, for I believe that Hichilema could have done far more to save her life. Rest in peace, Mama!
