Our greatest threat is the ongoing corruption, which continues to erode our institutions and endanger our future, far surpassing the harm already done by past corruption.
Lusaka, Aug. 13 – Renowned Constitutional Lawyer, John Sangwa, has described the corruption that is happening in the UPND government as more harmful than the corruption that has ever been observed in the past. And Sangwa says he is as disappointed as many Zambians are with the manner in which the UPND is running government.

“When the President Hichilema declared the fight against corruption, it was just a slogan. But here is the problem about why this fight is not serious. Corruption under PF was already done. These people had already stolen money, they had already taken their bribes and the damage was already done,” State Counsel Sangwa explained.
“So you have two kinds of corruption. There is past corruption and there is ongoing corruption. The most harmful corruption is not the past corruption, it is the corruption that is happening now that is more harmful,” Mr. Sangwa emphasised.
In a related development, Woodpecker’s Digest Managing Editor, Mpandashalo Mwewa, says President Hichilema’s decision to silence his critics through arrests raises a dark cloud of suspicion over his leadership. One must wonder what secrets lie buried beneath the polished surface he presents to the West.
“In a true democracy, journalism serves as the watchdog, a force that ensures transparency by fearlessly holding those in power accountable. A leader with nothing to hide would welcome scrutiny, offering clear and honest answers to the questions posed by the media. Yet, instead of transparency, we see repression – a desperate attempt to keep the truth from surfacing. The actions of a clean and upright Head of State would reflect confidence and integrity, addressing concerns with openness,” emphasises the critical thinking proponent.
Mpandashalo is of a strong view that at the centre of this repression is the on-going corruption.
“When the press is muzzled, it speaks volumes about the hidden fears and possible misdeeds lurking within the corridors of power. Such actions are not just an affront to journalism but a betrayal of the very principles of democracy,” he laments.
Contrary to President Hichilema’s political rhetoric, portraying his predecessor’s regime as corrupt, as State Counsel Sangwa aptly put it, the gravest threat we face is not the corruption of the past, with its damage already woven into the fabric of history, but the insidious corruption that persists today. It is this ongoing corruption that poses the most profound danger to our society, eroding our institutions and compromising our future.
