President Hichilema has stressed that preserving cultural heritage through traditional ceremonies is the secret sauce for peace and unity – the bedrock of economic growth!
Lusaka, Oct. 13 – The Ng’umbo people of Chifunabuli District in Luapula Province were treated to a rare and significant moment as President Hakainde Hichilema attended their esteemed Ukwanga Traditional Ceremony. His presence was not just symbolic but a testament to his administration’s deep respect for cultural heritage. By attending this event, the President underscored his government’s ongoing efforts to engage with traditional leaders and communities, marking a renewed commitment to preserving Zambia’s diverse traditions.

During his speech, President Hichilema emphasized that cultural heritage is crucial for national unity and economic progress. He urged Zambians to use traditional ceremonies as platforms to foster peace and inclusivity. In line with this, he reiterated the government’s dedication to uplifting citizens through initiatives such as free education, ensuring that no child is left behind, and called on the nation to reject divisive narratives.
Livestock and Fisheries Minister, Hon. Eng. Peter Kapala, seized the moment to rally support for the new dawn government as the country moves closer to the 2026 general elections. Acknowledging that the road to development may be tough, he likened the government’s efforts to a bitter pill that, although hard to swallow, promises lasting improvement.
The patron of the Peter Kapala Foundation encouraged the people to stay the course and trust that the challenges they face today will pave the way for a brighter, more prosperous Zambia. His metaphorical tone was a subtle reminder that real progress often comes at a price, but the rewards are worth the struggle.
The warmth of the occasion was further amplified by Local Government Minister, Hon. Gary Nkombo, who expressed deep gratitude for the community’s hospitality. He applauded the unity on display, affirming that the people’s support for the government was a clear sign of faith in its agenda and that the President’s presence at the Ukwanga Traditional Ceremony spoke volumes about his administration’s commitment to grassroots engagement.
Indeed, it reflects a leadership style rooted in accessibility and the belief that governance is a shared responsibility between the leaders and the people. The ongoing decentralisation policy is a key pillar in this effort, as seen in the dramatic increase in the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) from K1.6 million to a staggering K36 million. This bold move signifies the government’s belief that local communities, when empowered, can be drivers of their own development, with the state acting as a facilitator rather than a gatekeeper.

As President Hichilema continues to demonstrate, the path to sustainable development and national unity lies in harnessing the strength of our cultural identity, fostering inclusivity, and building a future where no one is left behind. The message from Chifunabuli was loud and clear: Zambia’s future will be built on the shoulders of both tradition and progress.
