A vibrant democracy thrives on diverse opinions and merit-based debate, and suppressing dissent will only hinder the innovative solutions Zambia needs for economic recovery and national development.

Lusaka, Oct. 14 – The Former Parliamentarians Association of Zambia (FPAZ) is deeply concerned about the increasing trend of intimidation and divisive rhetoric threatening Zambia’s democratic space. This worrying development, particularly manifested through social media platforms, has created an environment where objective voices on governance issues are being systematically silenced or insulted.

As Edgar Lungu’s legal team prepares to defend the Constitutional Court’s previous ruling on presidential terms, today’s proceedings could reshape Zambia’s political landscape and test the integrity of its democratic institutions.
As an association comprising former lawmakers who have served our nation in various capacities, we have observed that individuals with alternative views on national governance, be they elder statesmen, members of the clergy, ruling or opposition party officials are being subjected to unwarranted attacks. This behaviour undermines Zambia’s cherished principles of free speech, open dialogue, and inclusive governance.
We are alarmed by the growing culture of labeling those who offer differing opinions as mushanina bwali (praise singers) or indeed other demeaning phrases, and by the use of social media as a platform for insults, intimidation, and personal attacks. This atmosphere is detrimental to the democratic ethos upon which our country was built, and it poses a serious threat to the equitable participation of all Zambians in national discourse.
▪️ Defending Zambia’s Democratic Traditions
FPAZ calls on all Zambians, particularly the youth and those in positions of influence, to embrace the spirit of constructive dialogue and mutual respect. Our democracy was built on the foundation of diverse opinions, with robust debate contributing to the strengthening of our governance structures. The act of silencing or intimidating others because of differing views is not only undemocratic but also counterproductive to Zambia’s socio-economic progress.

The Zambian government’s attempt to arrest John Sangwa for contempt of court, following his criticism of the state, risks backfiring by amplifying his message and exposing political interference in the judiciary.
A healthy democracy requires that we welcome differences in opinion, and foster an environment where ideas are debated on their merit, not stifled through intimidation. The growing tendency to demonize dissenting voices will only limit the pool of ideas and perspectives necessary to address Zambia’s pressing challenges, including economic recovery and national development.
▪️ Impact on National Development
We also express concern over the negative impact this divisive culture may have on Zambia’s socio-economic growth. Governance is not only a matter of political engagement but also a key driver of development. Limiting the participation of objective and diverse minds in national discussions risks creating policies that do not reflect the needs and aspirations of the people.
As Zambia seeks to address issues such as poverty and food insecurity, youth unemployment, and sustainable development, we must ensure that all voices regardless of political affiliation are heard and valued. Inclusive governance is the bedrock of sustainable development, and we must safeguard this principle for the betterment of our nation.
▪️ A Call for Responsible Discourse
The FPAZ urges all stakeholders to take responsibility for their actions and words, particularly on social media platforms. We appeal to Zambians to reject insults, intimidation, and divisive thetoric, and instead promote unity, respect, and the constructive exchange of ideas. As former parliamentarians, we know that democracy thrives when diverse voices are allowed to flourish, and we must work together to protect Zambia’s democratic space.
Let us remember that as Zambians, we share a common goal: to build a prosperous and peaceful nation. The equitable participation of all citzens in national governance is key to achieving this goal.
