“The United States government recognizes only two genders: male and female, assigned at birth.” – Former President Donald Trump
Lusaka, November 12 – At a recent United Church of Zambia (UCZ) service in Kafue, Zambia’s former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu congratulated the American people on electing a “God-fearing leader,” underscoring that a leader’s faith should be integral to responsible governance. His comments came as Donald Trump, following his re-election, pledged to reinforce traditional views on gender identity in the United States.
“Only two genders are recognized by the United States government – male and female, assigned at birth,” Trump asserted. He further contended, “No serious country should be telling its children they were born with the wrong gender, a concept alien to human history.”

Lungu, aligning with Trump’s sentiments, expressed hopes of reviving Zambia’s own spiritual and moral framework. He suggested that a nation finds strength when its leaders uphold ethical and spiritual principles, implicitly challenging the current Zambian administration’s stance on LGBTQ rights and family values.
Under Article 9(2) of Zambia’s Constitution, the President is required to report to Parliament on government efforts to uphold and promote national values. However, in President Hichilema’s past addresses, he has conspicuously avoided affirming the sanctity of family values. Lungu also vowed to complete Zambia’s stalled National House of Prayer, a project meant to symbolize national unity and reflection.

As Zambia’s economic crisis worsens and Hichilema resorts to silencing the revelation of the truth, the likelihood of Edgar Lungu’s comeback grows, reflecting the people’s call for leadership that values accountability and true public service over political suppression.
As Trump’s victory was announced, Hichilema congratulated him, yet notably sidestepped any indication of policy changes regarding national values, emphasizing instead Trump’s previous support during Hichilema’s own challenging times in opposition.
However, Hichilema’s administration has faced scrutiny, with critics arguing that it panders to Western policy agendas, showing little commitment to preserving Zambia’s cultural and moral foundations. In Lungu’s view, Zambia’s leaders would do well to prioritize principles that resonate with the nation’s faith-based heritage.
