United Kwacha Alliance has gained huge momentum since its formation about a month ago according to political analysts who see it as the answer to the current economic problems of Zambia under Mr. Hichilema.
Lusaka, Feb. 11 – The newly formed opposition alliance in Zambia has advised the Hakainde Hichilema led government to bring the festering Barotse agreement issue before a round table and have it resolved conclusively before it explodes.
The alliance consisting of the largest opposition parties by parliamentary representation have warned that pretending the matter doesn’t exist is tantamount to burying ´their heads in the sand´ because it can only get worse.
The alliance calling itself United Kwacha Alliance or UKA sounded the call at a press briefing in Lusaka on Sunday attended by former President Mr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu, UKA interim chairman Mr. Sakwiba Sikota and Golden Party president Mr. Jackson Silavwe on behalf of eight other parties that co-signed the statement.
“Examples regarding solving problems such as the Barotseland issue are plenty within the continent and abroad,” Mr. Silavwe said, “There’s the Northern Ireland issue that was resolved around a table, the Biafra war and even here the issue that was resolved with the help of Commonwealth Head, Ms. Patricia Scotland when President Hichilema then in opposition was arrested in 2017 for an offence.”
Mr. Silavwe described the Barotseland issue as a ‘wound’ that shall only grow bigger if Mr. Hichilema fails to recognise it as thus after allegedly making promises that he would resolve it while in opposition.
On the same platform, the UKA chairman, Mr. Sakwiba Sikota, bemoaned the growing poverty in Zambia especially in rural areas which he believes leads to the general discontent nationwide as families struggle to put a meal on the table.
“Once in office, we will take development to rural Zambia to reduce poverty and we will keep our promise unlike the current government,” said Mr. Sikota. President Lungu today chose to remain silent to the chagrin of the media.
Recently, the media in Zambia has been rocked with the news of the resignation of the former Ngambela or Prime Minister of the Bartose Royal Establishment that is pushing for separation from Zambia due to skyrocketing poverty in Western Province or Barotseland on the heels of Mr. Hichilema dismissing the Barotseland as non-existent, even after having recognised its existence publicly in the past.
