Whilst President Lungu claims that the alliance formation is not about him and that anyone from the opposition could become the president, it becomes increasingly difficult to believe his words as he appears to be pulling the strings behind closed doors.

Lusaka, Feb. 13 – In a world riddled with political uncertainties and hidden agendas, it becomes increasingly challenging to trust politicians who veil their true intentions behind a façade of humility. The recent developments in Zambian politics have brought this dilemma to the forefront, particularly with regards to President Lungu and the formation of the United Kwacha Alliance (UKA).

“Man’s carnal mind will be quick to defend itself with legal spectacles, ignoring the spiritual ones which can tell when transitional leadership expires.” – Rev. Dr. Lackson Malombola.
When President Lungu announced his return to active politics, he proclaimed that his decision was fueled by a desire to defend democracy and support any opposition leader who could rescue the nation from the current abrogation of the rule of law. However, as events unfold, it becomes evident that these declarations were merely a smokescreen for his ulterior motives.
The emergence of UKA, with Sakwiba Sikota as its Interim Chairman, appears to be a survival plan devised by the Patriotic Front (PF) party, with President Lungu at its core. Whilst President Lungu claims that the alliance formation is not about him and that anyone from the opposition could become the president, it becomes increasingly difficult to believe his words. The alliance seems to revolve around him, as he hides in the shadows, pulling the strings behind closed doors.
Last weekend, President Lungu sent a delegation of Members of Parliament to Mwansabombwe on a clandestine mission. The agenda remains undisclosed, shrouded in secrecy that leaves the citizens speculating and wanting answers. Rumours circulate that PF MPs were each financially incentivized with K15,000 by President Lungu himself, supposedly to secure an endorsement from His Royal Highness Mwata Kazembe. The meeting conducted under lock and key further strengthens the perception that there is something to hide, and all participants were strictly prohibited from discussing any details.
The air is pregnant with anticipation as people eagerly inquire about the nature of the discussions held in Mwansabombwe. The truth remains elusive, further fueling skepticism and distrust amongst the populace. It is a stark reminder that politicians with hidden agendas are difficult to trust, as they manipulate situations to suit their own ambitions.
It is against this backdrop that the UKA signing ceremony took place. However, President Nawakwi, Harry Kalaba, and President Fube refused to be part of this movement, citing the hidden agenda being played by President Lungu. The alliance, anchored on his leadership and serving as a plan B for the PF, seems destined for failure, as those who can see through the charade choose not to be associated with it.

Trust in politicians dwindles when their actions consistently contradict their words. The politics of hidden agendas leave citizens wary and disillusioned. However, it is crucial to remain vigilant and question their intentions. As citizens, we must demand transparency and accountability from our leaders to prevent political maneuvers from undermining the very democracy we fought for.
In this time of uncertainty, it is imperative for the public to remain informed, engage in open dialogue, and critically analyze the actions and motives of politicians. By doing so, we can protect the ideals of democracy and ensure that our trust is not misplaced in those who lead us. Only then can we hope to forge a future built on genuine intentions and a shared commitment to the welfare of the nation.
