Lusaka, June 23 – As we gear up for the 2026 general elections, it’s time to separate the wheat from the chaff. Debates should zero in on the bedrock policies of each candidate’s campaign, casting a spotlight on their vision for a Zambia that’s not just keeping its head above water but riding the crest of the wave.

Allow me, consequently, to expound on the imperative need to prioritize the greater good over the current politics of self-preservation. Hichilema’s presidency has been marred by a series of reckless maneuvers, ruthlessly overhauling key institutions to tighten his grip on power. It is high time we champion policies that elevate the nation above the fray of political machinations.
Let’s ensure we’re putting the spotlight on plans that promise to turn over a new leaf for a resilient and dynamic Zambia.
◾The Judiciary: We need a new leader who will set out to untangle the Judiciary from the cobwebs of inefficiency and corruption. He or she must wield the broom of reform with fervor, ensuring that justice is no longer a puppet dancing on the strings of influence.

These measures should aim to restore public confidence and create a judicial system that stands as a paragon of fairness and integrity.
◾The Parliament: In Parliament, the next leader must be a meticulous gardener, pruning the excesses and nurturing a culture of accountability and transparency. Legislative reforms must curtail the whims of rogue legislators and fortify the house as a bastion of democracy.

This overhaul is essential to ensure that Parliament operates without being bogged down by partisan squabbles and inefficiency.
◾The Executive: The Executive branch should not escape the next leader’s reformist zeal. Like a blacksmith, he or she must hammer out inefficiencies and reforge the executive machinery to be more responsive and robust.

The changes must streamline operations, cut through bureaucratic red tape, and foster a more agile and effective governance structure. The goal should be to create an executive that swiftly responds to the people’s needs and the demands of governance.
◾The Political Advisers: This is where Hichilema has badly faltered. The next leader’s approach to political advisers should be like a master chef selecting the finest ingredients.
He or she must cull the deadwood and bring in patriotic Zambians, seasoned veterans who can provide sage advice and innovative solutions.

Our next statesman or woman must surround themselves with a cadre of experts capable of navigating the turbulent waters of politics with dexterity and foresight.
◾Expected Leadership Change: Looking ahead to post-2026 political leadership, we must demand a leadership change that is a spectacle of rejuvenation and strategic finesse.
Leadership transformation should be inclusive and forward-thinking, balancing firmness with empathy. This anticipated evolution should not just be a change of pace but a strategic recalibration, positioning a leadership style capable of steering the nation through the complexities of modern governance.

In essence, the corrective measures must be the proof in the pudding, showcasing a genuine commitment to fortify Zambia’s institutional framework. These reforms shouldn’t be mere window dressing but a full-scale overhaul, ensuring these pillars of governance can shoulder the weight of the nation’s aspirations.
As we approach the 2026 general elections, the fervent discussions surrounding these measures should be set to ignite the cornerstone of each candidate’s campaign, illuminating their visionary zeal for a Zambia that is not only robust but also dynamic and adaptable.
