Aware that he cannot defeat Edgar Lungu in the 2026 general elections, Hakainde Hichilema has placed all his cards on a compromised Judiciary preventing his rival from contesting.
Lusaka, Aug. 8 – Former President Edgar Lungu has announced his intent to stand for the presidential election in 2026, responding to what he describes as a resounding demand from the Zambian populace for his return to leadership.

Addressing Patriotic Front (PF) Mayors and Council Chairpersons in Lusaka, Lungu, who serves as the PF party president, emphasized the growing public sentiment lamenting the decision to vote his party out in August 2021, noting that many now believe the nation fared better under his administration.
“In 2026, no earthly adversary can thwart my return to the ballot,” declared Lungu, asserting his confidence in overcoming any obstacles.
Under his previous leadership, essential commodities like mealie meal were more affordable, Lungu claimed, contrasting this with what he described as the current government’s failure to manage the nation’s affairs effectively.

Lungu also assured the PF civic leaders that he is diligently working to resolve internal party disputes swiftly, maintaining the party’s unity and strength.
“PF shall remain steadfast,” he urged, encouraging leaders to continue mobilizing support within their constituencies to ensure the party’s resilience and ultimate victory over the UPND in the upcoming election.
Kitwe Mayor Mpasa Mwaya, also PF Chairperson for Local Government, expressed gratitude on behalf of the group, thanking Lungu for his continued leadership and support.
