…as a boat carrying 32 people submerges on Lake Mweru in Luapula Province killing a coxswain and a passenger while twelve others are missing.

Lusaka, April 19 – One person died after a vehicle he was travelling in was hit by a Goods Train at a junction near Kamwala Remand Correctional Facility.
The deceased was identified as Isaac Masuka aged 22 of Jack compound. He was on board a Mitsubishi Canter light truck bearing registration number ABJ 6207 driven by Lucky Sichilo aged 21 also of Jack compound in Lusaka.
The accident happened on April 18, 2023 around 13:00 hours at the Railway Crossing near Kamwala Remand Correctional Facility when the driver of the Light truck who was driving towards Kamwala Remand Correctional Facility failed to give way to the Goods Train which was moving towards the southern direction from the Railway Station.
The driver of the light truck sustained minor injuries while his motor vehicle was extensively damaged. He was arrested and currently awaiting to be formally charged.
The body of the deceased was deposited in the University Teaching Hospitals mortuary waiting for postmortem and burial.

In another development, two people including a coxswain died while twelve others are missing after a boat carrying 32 people submerged on Lake Mweru in Nchelenge District of Luapula Province. Eighteen people managed to swim to safety.
The deceased, a coxswain, identified as John Kambole aged 45 of Nchelenge District and Mutumbu Mwembo aged between 6 and 12 months were retrieved soon after the incident.
The incident occurred yesterday, April 18, 2023 between 06:00 hours and 08:00 hours on Lake Mweru waters as the boat was heading towards Kashobwe area of the Democratic Republic of the Congo from Kilwa Island on the Zambian side.
Police preliminary investigations indicate that most of the passengers were Congolese nationals using a boat belonging to a Zambian.
Further investigations have revealed that the accident happened due to strong waves on the lake. The search and rescue operation for the missing persons is ongoing.
