Mrs. Maureen Kakubo Mwanawasa, 61 years of age, was born on April 28, 1963 and has died today Tuesday the 13th August 2024.
Lusaka, Aug. 13 – It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of Former First Lady, Dr. Maureen Mwanawasa. Family members have confirmed that she was urgently admitted to Maina Soko Medical Centre, where she was reportedly suffering from an acute, unexplained cardiac pain.

“Mrs. Mwanawasa presented herself at Maina Soko Medical Centre and was undergoing thorough investigations to determine the cause of the angina, a condition characterized by chest pain due to reduced blood flow to the heart,” disclosed a source close to the matter.
Born on April 28, 1963, Mrs. Maureen Kakubo Mwanawasa, aged 61, departed from this life on Tuesday, August 13, 2024. As the devoted wife of Zambia’s 3rd President, Dr. Levy Mwanawasa, she served as First Lady of the Republic of Zambia from 2002 until 2008.
A distinguished lawyer and widow of the late President Levy Mwanawasa, who passed away while in office in 2008, Mrs. Mwanawasa leaves behind four children, including Chipokota Mwanawasa, a State House official and Deputy Head of the Presidential Delivery Unit.
Mrs. Mwanawasa’s legacy extends beyond her role as First Lady. She was an active member of the Association of Women Lawyers in the United Kingdom, served on the Law Association of Zambia Women’s Rights Committee, and held the position of Vice Chairperson for the Habitat for Humanity Zambia Board. Additionally, she was the Patron of the Breakthrough Cancer Trust and the Child Care & Adoption Society of Zambia.
During her tenure as First Lady, Mrs. Mwanawasa was a relentless advocate for health issues, particularly cervical cancer, and played a pivotal role in mobilizing First Ladies across Africa to champion causes related to the girl child and the fight against cancer.
Earlier, Dr. Moses Banda, the family spokesperson and Chairperson of the Levy Patrick Mwanawasa Foundation, had announced her admission to Maina Soko Military Hospital.
In his statement, Dr. Banda expressed, “The Levy Patrick Mwanawasa Foundation wishes to inform the nation that our esteemed Former First Lady, Mrs. Maureen Kakubo Mwanawasa, is currently receiving medical attention at Maina Soko Military Hospital. We extend our heartfelt wishes for her swift recovery.”
