Our tendency to fall for the Fallacy of Hasty Generalisation has the potential to harm relationships and erode trust across society. There’s no universal truth whatsoever that individual behaviour represents.
Lusaka, Nov. 5 – In our interconnected world, viral stories have a way of framing our perceptions, often shaping sweeping beliefs about entire groups based on the behaviour of a few. Recently, videos surfaced suggesting that a man had intimate relationships with numerous married women, sparking heated reactions. Such stories, however shocking, are a reminder to avoid the Fallacy of Hasty Generalisation – a trap that tempts us to define the whole based on isolated cases.

Psychosocially, itâs crucial to understand that individual behaviour doesnât represent a universal truth. Our tendency to make these hasty generalizations has the potential to harm relationships and erode trust across society. Here are four considerations to counterbalance the conclusions some may draw from the recent story:
âŸMarriage as a Complex Commitment: Loyalty and fidelity in marriage are deep, complex values shaped by personal character, not the institution itself. While marriage strengthens a commitment, individual behaviour is influenced by personal and situational factors, not universal tendencies.
âŸValues Beyond Monetary Temptations: While financial incentives may sway some people, the idea that âwomen abandon morals for moneyâ unfairly stereotypes half the population. Psychosocial research shows that values like integrity and loyalty often run deeper than immediate material desires and are influenced by upbringing, personal resilience, and individual ethics.
âŸEffort, Compromise, and Moral Integrity: It’s simplistic and misleading to assume that people, women included, would make âcompromisesâ without effort just to gain something. In reality, lifeâs pressures and societal challenges may affect choices, but this doesnât define everyoneâs approach to morality or effort.
âŸIdealized vs. Realistic Relationships: Attraction to wealth and security is universal, and it is natural for individuals to consider stability. However, this doesnât equate to a lack of commitment or automatic infidelity. Strong relationships are built on trust, respect, and communication, transcending superficial comparisons.

The principle that if you donât sacrifice for what you want, then what you want becomes the sacrifice has led many to ignorantly sacrifice responsibility and self discipline to achieve success through miracles.
As a society, letâs remember the importance of nuanced perspectives and resist stereotypes. Real progress and respect for integrity come from recognizing the individuality and values each person brings to their relationships, regardless of their gender. By breaking free from hasty generalizations, we cultivate a community that sees beyond viral stories, focusing on empathy, growth, and understanding.
