Former President Edgar Lungu congratulates Donald Trump’s election victory and urges global democracies to reject lawfare, advocating for fair competition and candidates’ freedom to stand without judicial obstruction.
Lusaka, Nov. 06 – Former President Dr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu has joined the global chorus in congratulating the 47th President of the United States, His Excellency Donald J. Trump, on his resounding comeback victory in what has been deemed the most consequential election in modern American history. With a wry smile, Lungu mused, “If this were here, we might say in Bemba: ‘Nabwelelapo pamupando’ – he’s returned to the throne.”

Aware that he cannot defeat Edgar Lungu in the 2026 general elections, Hakainde Hichilema has placed all his cards on a compromised Judiciary preventing his rival from contesting.
In his message, Lungu acknowledged Trump’s remarkable resilience, remarking on how the former U.S. president, one of the most relentlessly scrutinized leaders in American history, had shown the world that discipline, resilience, and an unyielding patriotic spirit could stir the masses. “I speak from experience when I say many Zambians, myself included, are proud of President Trump’s achievement and stand with him as he prepares to step into the White House in January 2025,” he affirmed.
Lungu’s congratulations extended beyond borders, recognizing the sweeping impact America’s political trajectory has on the world. “Though the United States may feel distant for many ordinary Zambians, its actions resonate far and wide, influencing us politically, economically, and diplomatically,” he noted. He expressed hope that Trump’s leadership would help mediate ongoing conflicts, from the Gaza-Israel situation to the Russia-Ukraine war, underscoring the crucial diplomatic weight his presidency carries in a shrinking global community.
Praising the American electoral and judicial systems, Lungu highlighted their unwavering commitment to democracy, ensuring Trump’s name was on the ballot despite ongoing legal battles. “America has given the world a lesson: in a true democracy, candidates must be allowed to run their race freely, not hindered by ‘lawfare’ or judicial roadblocks,” he declared, alluding to his own struggle with potential legal barriers aimed at preventing his participation in Zambia’s 2026 general elections.
